The question is, are they looking for ideas for the typical run-of-the-mill, filler-type TNC story (the majority of news you read nowadays), or something that will grow into a 3,000-6,000 word series that will win them a Pulitzer?

Exactly. Every service worker should by law get 20% of the total bill's amount going directly into their income. The way the American tipping system works, patrons who tip generously are in effect subsidizing the services provided to those who either don't tip or tip lousily. The time to make a little change to a system is when you realize the system is rewarding bad behavior and punishing good behavior.

Uber's token of gratitude towards it's most esteemed drivers is slashing their rates/mile.

Like most private sector for-profit organizations, Uber is just trying to pay as little as possible to its PC drivers to the level just slightly above which where large large numbers of its PC drivers will quit.

I have seen countless of private-sector workers, they spent their entire adult lives working loyally for a company for decades, every day dragging themselves out of bed just so they could camp out at their tiny cubicle all day long. At the end, when they retired, the only two things they got were A, a lousy Rolex watch, and B, the harsh reality that without much private retirements account balances, with mostly just their Soc. Sec. checks coming in, they are looking at working for near-minimum wage gigs like as a greeter or security checkers at entrances to retailers, or, lately, driving as a PC driver.

For TNC driving, at least the drivers don't have to drag themselves out of bed every day. They can get all the 8-10 hours of sleep they need, wake up on their own will and preference, then head out to drive for $60 to $120 per day of net income.

$120 a day means about $30,000 a year. With assistance checks handed to them by the hardworking and generous taxpayers, the combined income may (or may not be) $60,000 per year. That is slightly higher than the average income per person in the country.
